GA4 BigQuery export: what it is and when it's worth it

GA4 can export raw event data to BigQuery for free. What that means, when it pays off, and how it relates to server-side tracking and data ownership.

GA4 offers something Universal Analytics didn't for free: exporting raw event data to BigQuery. For some it's pointless, for others the most valuable thing GA4 has. Here's what it is and when it's worth it.

What the BigQuery export is

The BigQuery export sends raw, unaggregated event data from GA4 to Google BigQuery (a data warehouse). Instead of pre-built reports in the GA4 interface, you get access to individual events and can build your own analyses with SQL.

When it's worth it

  • Custom, deeper analyses the GA4 interface can't do (complex funnels, custom attribution, joining with other data).
  • Joining with business data — connecting on-site behavior with orders, CRM, margins.
  • Data ownership. You hold the raw data, independent of GA4 interface limits and retention.

When you don't need it

If standard reports suffice and you don't have the capacity for SQL/data analysis, the BigQuery export is needless complexity. It's a tool for more advanced scenarios, not a starting point.

How it relates to server-side tracking

The BigQuery export is only as good as the data flowing into GA4. Server-side tracking ensures more complete, reliable data reaches GA4 (and therefore BigQuery) — fewer losses to ad-blockers and ITP. The raw data in BigQuery then reflects reality, not patchy client-side measurement. It relates to owning first-party data.

Summary

The GA4 BigQuery export gives access to raw event data for custom analyses and joining with business data — and thus more ownership. It's worth it for more advanced users; for ordinary reports it's unnecessary. Export quality is set by input-data quality, which server-side tracking raises. More in the complete guide.
